Winter Family Weekend - Dec 23-27

We are less than two months away from the 2008 Winter Family Weekend in Louisville, Kentucky. A stellar lineup of educational opportunities, sporting events and family fun activities are being planned for all ages. We hope you will make plans to join us this year. Gas prices are going down at just the right time. The theme of this year’s Winter Family Weekend is “Called to Lead.” God has called us into training. He has called us to develop our leadership skills. There is no time like the present to focus specifically on honing these skills. More information is available on the Information Table.

Jamaica Feast Site

I visited Jamaica a few weeks ago and sat with the Holiday Inn Sunspree’s reservations manager to get an idea of the number of members that made reservations at the hotel. Some have made reservations with the hotel, but have not requested a Festival Transfer Application from the Caribbean office. Already it looks as if we will not be able to accommodate all those intending to transfer.

The Holiday Inn has limited meeting space — the auditorium can only accommodate 400 people. The Jamaica congregations have 100 people which means that we are only able to have 300 transfers to the site. Currently we are showing 333 officially registered from the U.S. and this does not include others who have made reservations without sending in an application for a transfer.

All who are planning to attend the Festival site in Jamaica, please refer to the directions in the “United News.” If you have not already contacted Kingsley Mather in the Caribbean office about transferring, please do so immediately at
ucgcarib@coralwave.com or by telephone at (242) 324-3169 so we can avoid possible difficulties at the Feast. Already it appears that we will likely need to ask some brethren to make other plans.

We will try to accommodate as many as we can. Those who contacted the office and received a numbered application and are on the United Church of God official room list do not need to contact me.

Thank you for your help.
Kingsley Mather

Minesterial Services - Jim Franks

As we approach the summer, we anticipate several changes in pastoral assignments. In the next few days we will be able to announce additional transfers. Below is the list from last month with the addition of Tom and Sarah Kirkpatrick.

Some of you may be unaware, but Tom and Sarah served in the U.S. field ministry prior to his becoming treasurer for the Church in 1998. We hired Tom in 1996 to be the associate pastor in Houston North where I was serving as the pastor. In 1997 traveling with the Council and Ministerial Services took me out of the Houston area for several weeks at a time. In many respects Tom served as the pastor of our largest congregation for the two years he lived in Houston.

Given the needs we have in the ministry, we are happy to have him return to the field as a pastor in Alabama. We know that he has big shoes to fill in the case of Bill Winner. Bill was one of our most effective pastors, and his sudden death this past January is still difficult for all of us. Tom and Sarah should make this move from Milford and assume the pastorate before the Feast of Tabernacles in the fall. In the meantime, David Dobson will continue to pastor the Birmingham and Gadsden congregations.

Treasurer’s Update - From Jason Lovelady

We now have the final results in for Pentecost, and we are pleased to
report an encouraging 5.5 percent increase over last year for a total of
$867,000. In fact, each of the Spring Holy Day offerings this year has been
encouraging. The final results for First Day of Unleavened Bread was a 3.9
percent increase over last year for a total of $856,000, and the final results
for Last Day of Unleavened Bread was a 3.1 percent increase over last
year for a total of $828,000.

As reported earlier, the months of February (9.39 percent increase), March
(8.78 percent increase) and April (6.8 percent increase) were all trending
higher than the 2 percent increase in income that we were experiencing
year to date. The last two months, however, have not been as encouraging.
In the month of May regular mail income was down 4.9 percent compared
to last year; and for the month of June (through June 25) income is down
2.8 percent compared to last year.

While just a month and a half ago, I was confident that we would close the
fiscal year with income $23,500,000 or higher, we will most likely end the
year slightly less than that – somewhere between $23,400,000 and
$23,500,000. Even with the sluggish last two months of the year, we still
expect to end the year with close to a 2 percent increase in income over
last year, and we can be thankful for that.

UYC Project Jordan - From Mr. Baker & Mr. Meeker

The United Youth Corps Project in Jordan is off and running. After several
days of orientation and visits to sites connected with biblical history such as
Succoth, Pella, Gadara, cities of Decapolis and Bethany beyond the
Jordan, the eight Youth Corps volunteers are now (as this is being written)
working in two camps in Jordan. Four are working at the YMWA (Young
Muslim Women’s Association) camp for mentally challenged people in
Amman. They have been showing an excellent example working
enthusiastically for long hours each day. The camp staff has been very
appreciative of the volunteers’ assistance.

The other four have been working in a summer camp for kindergartners in a
rural village of Jordan about 10 miles as the crow flies from Petra.. The
camp has focused on introducing the children to new art, music, science
and math activities, with an emphasis on an introduction to simple English
concepts such as numbers, colors and parts of the body. At the end of the
week, as the camps end, the volunteers will visit Petra and Aqaba on the
Red Sea before continuing on for a brief historical tour of Israel before
participating on a four-week archeological excavation sponsored by Tel
Aviv University on the site of Tel Megiddo in north-central Israel.

Greece Unleavened Bread Educational Tour - Jan 8

During the Days of Unleavened Bread in 2008, the education travel program will offer a biblical study tour of Greece. We will focus on the travels of the apostle Paul and his letters to the Corinthians, examining the meaning and symbols for the New Testament Passover and Days of Unleavened Bread. We have now reached our operating minimum. It seems almost certain we will have enough to make the trip a GO. NOW is the time to put down your deposit and save your place for our education tour of Greece!

A detailed description of the tour is available on the Travel Gallery Web site, www.travelgallery.com, or you may call Travel Gallery (800-858-6999). The deposit deadline is January 8. If you have additional questions, please contact David Register (David_Register (at) ucg.org).

Council of Elders Report - From Clyde Kilough

The Council of Elders is at the beginning stages of a strategic planning process that will guide our priorities for the next several years. The Council believes that our dedicated members, elders and staff can provide critical input into the directions we should consider. To this end, we want to give all members, elders, and employees an opportunity to share their thoughts on broad strategic issues such as where we are, where we need to be and how we might get there.

To do so, we have crafted a confidential survey for the members, elders and employees of the United Church of God. The survey contains quantitative questions as well as questions which allow you to give written responses. Please be as frank, honest and constructive as you can. This is an opportunity for the Council of Elders to hear the members’, elders’ and staff’s best thinking about the directions we should consider taking.

We will be utilizing a Web-based survey to collect responses and collate data. All surveys must be completed on-line, which will reduce the time and expense of processing responses. You may access the survey by going to the members Website at http://members.ucg.org and click on the members survey link.

The deadline for completing the survey is January 6, 2008. It should take about 30 minutes to complete the survey, and we really hope you will invest the time to offer your input! Thank you in advance.

United Youth Corps

There is a letter to all Young Adults about the United Youth Corps available at the Information Table today, as well as individual sheets about the various Corps opportunities — Philippines, Ghana, Nigeria, Amman, and Kenya.

More information is also available at members.ucg.org/youthcorps.

Members’ Survey

Be sure to take the UCG Members’ Survey! The survey is available online and you can find more information at members.ucg.org/survey. The deadline is January 6.

New Web Site & Church News Program

I am happy to announce that we are launching two new tools that will improve our ability to communicate to the entire Church. First, we are launching a new Web site specifically for members of the United Church of God – members.ucg.org. This will help us make our Web site, UCG.org, a better “first contact” tool for the general public and give us a new location to post items that are truly more appropriate and applicable to the Church membership. This new Web site will provide a central location for Church news/announcements and an event calendar, provide biblical resources and make it easier for members to find important information. Second, the main feature on this members’ site will be a regular, online news-of-the-work video entitled, About Our Father’s Business. We announced before the Feast that we would be revising our Compass Check presentation, which had simply been a video of the home office staff meeting. About Our Father’s Business, which will be produced weekly in the media center studio beginning.

All you need to do to stay connected with the news and work of the United Church of God and to watch the weekly video About Our Father’s Business, is type in this Web address: members.ucg.org

“Vision for the Future” Video

The DVD sent to all UCG elders titled “Vision for the Future” is now available for online viewing. This video is much more detailed about UCG’s plans for the future than the one shown during Sabbath services March 17. You will need to enter the password given to you by your pastor in order to view the video. Click the link below to start watching.

Vision for the Future

Special Announcement from Clyde Kilough

In the December 16 letter read in all congregations, we announced that due to the healthy state of our income we are going to be able to substantially invest more money this fiscal year than we previously thought possible. This includes plans for paying off the home office facility, more ministerial training, plus over a half-million dollars extra in our media efforts to preach the gospel.

Expanding our media efforts is, of course, “mission critical.” For the last number of years our efforts to proclaim the gospel have been growing steadily, actually mushrooming in some arenas, and all signs point to this trend accelerating in the future—the church’s membership is united and zealous, the income is strong, the media tools are in place.

Philippine Typhoon Update

“Dave Baker telephoned this morning from the Philippines and I am relieved
to report to you that all of the church members are safe after Typhoon Durian passed through.  Durian, the fourth typhoon to hit the Philippines in three months, was a category 4 storm that was bearing down on Manila but veered south through the central part of the country.  Hundreds are feared dead, many are missing, thousands have been left homeless, and the nation has suffered millions of dollars in damage.  While we are indeed grateful that all of the members were protected, it is sobering to see the destruction and grief that another disaster has yet again put upon people.”
